Cybersecurity is the Backbone of Democracy

Philip Reitinger, Francesca Bosco, Oktavía Hrund Guðrúnar Jóns and Jocelyn Woolbright in Conversation with Michael Daniel

Aug 27, 2025

With deepfakes, AI-driven disinformation, phishing campaigns, and state-sponsored malware, cybersecurity is no longer confined to tech experts; they are shaping the future of democracy. As elections are manipulated, dissent is silenced, and public trust is undermined, the question arises: who is protecting the digital landscape we all depend on?

What many people don’t know is that a silent network of organizations maintain critical cybersecurity functions for the good of the Internet and all its users, including the most vulnerable and under-resourced in our society. In this conversation, the global experts and nonprofits that quietly power the security and integrity of the Internet will come together to explore the realities of the lines of digital defense that protect us. These groups support vulnerable communities, defend human rights, and help ensure access to secure information, though most have never heard of them. With limited funding and skeleton crews these nonprofits are the critical line of defense providing the basic infrastructure we all rely on. This program will explore why this ecosystem faces existential challenges and share practical ways organizations and individuals can support this effort, protect themselves, and help ensure the Internet remains a safe space for civic engagement, advocacy, and democratic action.

This program is part of 92NY Recanati-Kaplan Talks.
