From neighborhood soccer fields to high school basketball courts to college swimming pools, questions about transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports are sparking passionate debate. Should a transgender girl be allowed to join her school team? How do we balance fairness and inclusion when all kids just want the chance to play?
Too often, the conversation is framed around Olympic podiums or professional leagues. But for many families, it’s about something closer to home: your niece who loves soccer, your daughter on the track team, or the transgender teenager who simply wants to belong.
It’s a topic debated in statehouses and the halls of Congress. Now, this urgent installment of The Dialogue Project — our series dedicated to modeling civil debate on today’s most pressing issues — Duke law professor and former track athlete Doriane Coleman and transgender sports scientist Dr. Joanna Harper bring deeply informed but different perspectives. Moderated by Jessica Tarlov, this timely conversation goes beyond the headlines and high-stakes politics to ask what’s really at stake for everyday athletes, families, and communities, as well what is ‘right’ for highly competitive athletes. More than a sports story — it’s a debate about what is fair that touches us all.
