In the second half of the nineteenth century, Rabbi Chaim of Zanz was renown for his learning, prayer, song and especially charity. All money that came to him by day was distributed to the poor by night. The Rebbe of Rizhin (and after, of the town of Sadigur) was equally renown for his nobility and his love of his fellow Jews. After his passing a quarrel erupted between these two Hasidic courts. Rabbi Chaim raged against Sadigur; Sadigur mainly remained silent. In Palestine it was the reverse, with Sadigur on the offensive. The dispute ended seven years later, with the passing of Rabbi Chaim. How could it be that such an intense feud could leave so few scars? “Once upon a time, before the quarrels and before the disputes, they all stood at Sinai together to receive the same law together. They? They alone? All of us.”
