Thomas Friedman in Conversation with Ambassador Dennis Ross: Israel, The Middle East, and the Future of Diplomacy

The Michelle and Norman Lattman Lecture

Sep 30, 2025

Please submit questions for the speakers in the chat starting on September 30 at approximately 6 pm ET.

Join three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Thomas Friedman and Ambassador Dennis Ross, a veteran of Middle East peace talks for Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, for a conversation about Israel’s role in the power structure of the Middle East, and the art of US diplomacy in a changing world — and Ross’ new book, Statecraft 2.0: What America Needs to Lead in a Multipolar World.

The world dominated by the US after the Cold War is gone, and the US can no longer afford to practice shoddy statecraft. What power structure has replaced the one built up at the end of the 20th century? InStatecraft 2.0, Dennis Ross lays out a political insider’s vision of US power abroad, gleaned from decades of experience arguing for US interests in the Middle East, China, and Russia. Distilling critical lessons from both history and his own remarkable career, Ross develops an invaluable framework for understanding the US role on the world stage, from the Israel-Palestinian conflict to Iran, China, and beyond.

In a conversation between two seasoned US foreign policy experts, hear Friedman and Ross give a clear-eyed analysis of how the relationship between Israel and the US has shifted since October 7. Two years later, what is the state of diplomacy between the US and our most important ally in the Middle East? How does this relationship reflect a larger shift in the diplomatic, economic, and military implications of our new world order? What is America getting right? What are we getting wrong? What does our nation stand to gain — and lose — in the years to come?
