How does fiction work? What does it really mean to show versus tell in our writing? How do narration and point of view alter the way a reader experiences a story?
In this Zoom-only class, in addition to workshopping our own work, we will read a range of published fiction, from Hemingway to ZZ Packer, and focus on the nuts and bolts of craft behind the stories that draw us in. When we discuss the class’s creative output, we’ll strive to isolate these elements as much as possible. Our aim is not only to carry these lessons with us into the future as writers, but as sensitive readers attuned to authorial intentions; to read as writers. In addition, we will talk about publishing and how to begin a writing career.
Students praise Teddy’s teaching approach: “I can’t say enough about how great Teddy’s class has been. The substance and structure are fantastic, and Teddy is an expert facilitator. He elicits constructive feedback from everyone in a safe, productive environment and illustrates his points with examples that drive home his points perfectly. It’s also been extremely helpful to workshop our classmates’ pieces—the exercise of reading, thinking, and critiquing helps one better understand their own work. Teddy has done a great job helping me become a more critical reader and a more thoughtful writer. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.”
Enrollment is limited to 12 students.
