This workshop focuses on the submissions of the participants alongside a handful of published short stories that we will read closely with an eye toward gleaning lessons from them that will inform our compositional practices.
Our workshop discussions will marshal our highest intelligence in the service of helpful, cogent, respectful feedback about what works and doesn’t in the pages under consideration. We will explore the formal underpinnings of narrative art, emphasizing craft techniques such as: managing point of view and time; writing with the five senses; incorporating both showing and telling in one’s work; creating stakes; establishing voice; cultivating beauty; emphasizing conflict; promoting ambiguity; and creating an opportunity for affect.
Students are chosen by Matthew Thomas on the basis of a manuscript submission. Applications must be received by October 14 at 5 pm. View the submission guidelines and submit an application for this class.
Scholarship assistance is available. Applications must be returned to Scholarship Services at least two weeks before the first session.
