Introduction to Poetry with Betsy Bonner
Introduction to Poetry with Betsy Bonner

Overview

In this two-week poetry-writing workshop, we’ll discover and study the line, voice, imagery, song, personae, rhyme, endings, beginnings, and some classic structural forms, such as the sonnet and villanelle. Lisa Russ Spaar's More Truly and More Strange: 100 Contemporary American Self-Portrait Poems is a wonderful resource. Before our first class, I will distribute packets of poems and discussion material for this course. In class, students will draft one tritina (a form invented by Marie Ponsot) and write a self-portrait poem. This is a generative workshop with an opportunity for revision.
