92NY NEXUS' Julia Zeuner with member Elizabeth Shine, apple picking in Warwick, NY, October 2025
The buzzy new membership club for dynamic adults in their 50s and 60s, 92NY NEXUS at 92NY was created so people could expand their social network while doing the things they love.
Each 92NY NEXUS event pairs an activity, outing, or performance on 92NY’s stage with a social component — like a happy hour or dinner before a concert or talk. Since launching in December 2024, 92NY NEXUS has grown its offerings, so there truly are choices for every interest. Recent events have included live jazz and cocktails on our rooftop, ping pong and tacos, an architectural tour of NYC skyscrapers with lunch in Chinatown, cocktails before our Motown Lyrics & Lyricists concert, pickleball or line dancing with dinner, evening walks in Central Park, a members-only excursion to Storm King Art Center, and more. Many events regularly sell out.
Julia Zeuner, LMSW, Executive Director of 92NY’s Center for Engaged Aging, created 92NY NEXUS to fill a need she saw in New York City: a lack of meaningful community and high-quality programming for people in their 50s and 60s. “I saw a gap for people in this population, many of them still working, who wanted interesting and meaningful things to engage in — and, most of all, other people to engage in those things with,” she says. “92NY NEXUS is a vibrant community just for them.”
We talked with three 92NY NEXUS members about what brought them to the club, what they have found, and what they are loving.
ELIZABETH SHINE: I had just moved back to New York after three decades out of the city, and I was looking to reconnect with my old life here and build new community. I learned about 92NY NEXUS from a 92NY email and decided to attend the launch party. Julia talked about this new club and the kind of events she’d be arranging, and I had a feeling smart, interesting people would be signing up.
I’m a bit shy, and it took a few events before I felt less awkward. I started seeing familiar faces, people began chatting more and they started exchanging phone numbers. Since then, I’ve gone to 92NY NEXUS talks, Lyrics & Lyricists shows, played ping pong. I’m a tennis player, and I discovered pickleball through 92NY NEXUS. Fast forward to now, and I have a really nice group of four women I see regularly because of this club. We go to dinner, we go to the theater, I made a good friend on the apple picking trip in the fall – 92NY NEXUS really did connect me with people who have become part of my life.
Before 92NY NEXUS, there had been space in my life for more. Now I almost have too much to do! I could go out seven days a week with people I’ve met through 92NY NEXUS. I’ve been enjoying the city and all the cultural things there are to do and now there are these great people who want to do them with me. I’d already had a good, fulfilling life. I feel very fortunate that now, at this stage, I’m probably living my best life.
VIKRAM MULCHANDANI: Shortly after I moved to the Upper East Side two-and-a-half years ago, I began looking for neighborhood community-based centers and resources. I learned about 92NY NEXUS through 92NY’s website. I had lived in NYC during college, then moved around a lot for my work, including assignments that had me based in India and China. Moving back to New York, I was looking to make new connections and liked that 92NY NEXUS was targeted to my age group.
The first event I attended was a game night. Soon after, I went to the annual members’ party, which was amazing for me. Not only was it a big bash, but I met some people I’ve stayed connected with. I’ve attended other events, like jazz on the rooftop, and a really impressive expert-led tour of NYC skyscrapers. A couple of 92NY NEXUS members have become good friends. We go out to see plays and shows and other cultural events. A few weeks ago, I had a soiree at my place and invited three people I met through 92NY NEXUS. Even in the short term, I’ve already reaped benefits in terms of the connection I was looking for.
What has been most rewarding has been the ability to forge meaningful connections in an in-person setting. So much of the world has gone online. But there is nothing like in-person connection, and 92NY NEXUS is providing the space to meet like-minded people in a similar age group with similar interests. As we get older, the ability to make new friends and build new relationships is more challenging than it was earlier in life. I’m really grateful for 92NY NEXUS. I’m more than happy to be the poster child for this club!
BONNIE HAMILTON: I’m new to New York. I was born here, but as a child lived in England and Canada. I was a doctor in California, but came back to NYC because of the wildfires. I’d been looking at events on 92NY’s website and saw there was going to be a 92NY NEXUS rooftop party. I was in need of friends – people I could socialize with, people I could talk with. So I joined. I attend all the events I can, and I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve done – concerts, pickleball, outings – it’s all been lovely, and I’ve made good friends from it. I just went to a second rooftop party and met more people. They’re bright, they’re engaged, they’re interesting, and they’re interested in friendship. 92NY NEXUS has been an incredibly positive milieu for meeting people.
In my 20s and 30s, I thought, I could be ok with just a library of books, and if the whole human population disappeared, I’d be ok with that. Then when the pandemic came, I realized, no!! I depend on other people. For warmth. For conversation. I’ve been back in New York for a year and a half, and I think I’d underestimated my need for people. My need for friendship. I’ve made two good friends I see weekly, and it has made such a difference in my life. To find people you really connect with – it’s beautiful. 92NY NEXUS has been a lifeline.
Upcoming 92NY NEXUS events include:
A flower arranging workshop with wine and light bites (Sep 9) … drinks at La Bomboniera before the Jon Stewart and John Feal talk, an evening to commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11 (Sep 17) … the Miles Davis Centennial Concert by the Miles Electric Band and dinner (Oct 17) … and a members-only excursion upstate for fall foliage, apple picking and lunch at a cidery (Oct 25). New events are added regularly.
More than 550 people have joined 92NY NEXUS since it launched less than two years ago. "One of the reasons this club is so special is that it’s part of 92NY, where the programming is already so rich and expansive," says Zeuner. "We’re not only building community, “we’re also fueling discovery and galvanizing people whose busy lives have often made them forget the thrill of learning something new and connecting with others who share their interest. 92NY NEXUS is turning strangers into real friends. It’s been a gamechanger for so many people."
