Challenging the Man of God: a Paradigm for Contemporary Judaism

Oct 30, 2000

Dr. Alice Shalvi, professor and founding chairwoman of the Israel Women’s Network, speaks about Elisha the prophet, also known as the Man of God. This lecture is part of the Aaron Friedberg J.D. Lecture Series in Bible Studies, sponsored by Phillip and Jamela Winetrout. Dr. Shalvi reads a translation of a bible story, encouraging the audience to pay attention to the structure and language of the text. In the story, Elisha, a prophet and miracle worker, miraculously gives a kind woman a son and then later resurrects the child from the dead. Dr. Shalvi notes that the actions and agency of the mother emphasize the importance of “personal action” and “the role of women to challenge the Man of God or even God himself” The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
