Polarization is often framed as a domestic crisis—a story of gridlock in Congress, fractured media ecosystems, and deepening cultural divides.
But the consequences don’t stop at the border. In Polarization and International Politics, political scientists Rachel Myrick explores how America’s internal divisions are reshaping its external posture. Drawing on case studies and empirical research, she traces how partisan fragmentation in both Congress and the executive branch is influencing diplomatic norms, strategic coherence, and the credibility of U.S. commitments abroad.
Join Dr. Myrick as she discusses her new book with Dr. Brett Rosenberg, a former National Security Council and State Department official. Together, they’ll explore how the erosion of bipartisan consensus — once a bedrock of American foreign policy — has given way to ideological bloc voting, shifting priorities, and a growing mismatch between long-term strategy and short-term political incentives. The result is a foreign policy apparatus increasingly pulled in conflicting directions, as polarization recalibrates not just how decisions are made, but whose interests they serve. This conversation asks a pressing question: as America becomes more divided at home, what happens to its leadership in the world?
