Muldoon’s Picnic returns — a raucous literary variety show where poetry, music, comedy, and conversation dance together in an intimate, carnivalesque salon.
Hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon, Muldoon’s Picnic gathers artists who delight in crossing boundaries: the wry, big-hearted comedy of Mike Birbiglia; the inimitable voice of The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle; visionary, award-winning poets Shane McCrae, former UK Poet Laureate Andrew Motion, and the ever-magnetic J. Hope Stein; plus a luminous musical performance from Grammy Award-winner singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega.
The evening’s centerpiece is a tribute to legendary poet John Berryman’s Only Sing: a newly unearthed selection of his classic Dream Songs, edited by McCrae, constituting the final book of one of the funniest, saddest, strangest, most hypnotic poetic sequences compiled by an American in the 20th century. In celebration of its publication, McCrae and Darnielle read from these newly assembled poems — bringing to light a whole new realm of Berryman’s brilliant and heartbreaking account of madness, shot through with searing insight.
Comedy and poetry, music and storytelling, performers discovering the joy of sharing a stage with artists who work in entirely different registers: join us for an eclectic evening featuring some of the most revered writers and artists of our time — a night of poetry, music, ideas and much more. Surprises abound: don’t miss out.
