Breaking Ground

Murray Louis

Jan 18, 1996

Deborah Jowitt, dance critic for The Village Voice, moderates a discussion with choreographer and modern dancer Murray Louis. Louis shares a selection of clips from Murray Louis in Concert (1989), a video collection of his solos, including “Journal (Opening Dance),” “Index… (To necessary neurosis): Hysteria,” and “The Disenchantment of Pierrot.” Jowitt and Louis discuss Louis’s career, artistic process, and his creative partnership with Alwin Nikolais. This partnership resulted in the creation of the Nikolais/Louis dance technique and the Murray Louis and Alwin Nikolais Dance Company. The discussion is followed by questions from the audience.
