Acclaimed poet and novelist Rachel Eliza Griffiths joins Nicholas Boggs, author of New York Times-bestselling biography Baldwin: A Love Story, for a conversation about transforming grief into hope — and her new memoir, The Flower Bearers.
On the day that Rachel Eliza Griffiths married her husband, the novelist Salman Rushdie, Griffiths’ closest friend, the poet Kamilah Aisha Moon — who was expected to speak at the wedding — died suddenly. Eleven months later, as Griffiths attempted to piece together her life as a newlywed with heartbreak in one hand and immense love in the other, a brutal attack nearly killed her husband. Griffiths realized that in order to survive her grief, she would need to mourn not only her friend, but the woman she had been on her wedding day. The Flower Bearers is an account of her transformation — a reflection on her friendship with Moon and her relationship with Rushdie, and the unshakeable devotion that continues to bind her to both.
In celebration of the book’s launch, hear Griffiths and Boggs — himself a brilliant chronicler of literary love and friendship — in a discussion about how Griffiths turned an impossibly difficult chapter of her life into a beacon of sisterhood, growth, and love.
“There is something almost brazenly old-school about The Flower Bearers, Rachel Eliza Griffiths’ elegant and juicy new memoir.” — New York Times
