Award-winning filmmaker Raoul Peck discusses his searing new documentary, Orwell: 2+2=5, with journalist George Packer, and shares clips from the film.
Raoul Peck’s I Am Not Your Negro, a powerful look at the life and politics of James Baldwin, was hailed by critics as a masterpiece of documentary filmmaking — listed as one of the 100 best films of the 21st century by The New York Times. Nearly a decade later, Peck is back with a portrait of an equally visionary 20th century writer. Chronicling George Orwell’s political evolution from a young officer in the Indian Imperial Police of Burma into one of the definitive antifascist political writers of his time, George Orwell: 2+2=5 is more than the story behind the man who wrote Animal Farm and 1984. Politically savvy, visually stunning, and morally bracing, it is a rallying cry against totalitarianism in all forms — “the boldest documentary anyone could make right now” (TIME) — bringing Orwell’s relevance for our time into urgent focus.
What makes 1984 such a revolutionary novel? Why does Animal Farm feel so uncannily contemporary? In a conversation including clips from the film, hear Peck and Packer discuss his longtime fascination with Orwell, what allowed him to see our political future, why his writing still retains the sting of truth, stories from behind the scenes, and more.
