Sigrid Nunez with Vivian Gornick: It Will Come Back to You

Jul 14, 2026

The National Book Award-winning author of The Friend — one of America’s great living fiction writers — takes our stage for the launch of her first-ever collection of short stories, It Will Come Back to You.

Sigrid Nunez, over the course of three decades and nine acclaimed novels, has produced a penetrating, profound body of work — melding a “wry, withering wit” (NPR) with “explosions of pathos” (The Washington Post). Never before collected together, the 13 stories of It Will Come Back to You comprise a distillation of her work to its essence. Moving from an inappropriate teenage crush to a therapist’s second chance at love, Nunez’s irrepressible humor is thrown into balance with profound inquiries into aging, desire, the allure of solitude, and the philosophical forces behind our desire to turn life into art.

In conversation with the legendary memoirist, Vivian Gornick, hear two living legends discuss the craft of the short story in an evening that that shows the depth, subtly, and range of Nunez’s oeuvre coming into focus for the first time.

This program is part of the Unterberg Poetry Center.
