Join Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz — the hosts of the hit New Yorker podcast Critics at Large — for a conversation about the long afterlife of one the greatest love stories of all time: Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.
Emerald Fennell’s new adaptation — starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, with music by Charli XCX — is far from the first such treatment of the classic, which has inspired movies, TV shows, albums, even operas. What makes Wuthering Heights, first published in 1847, such a lasting touchstone? Is it the doomed romance, the moody moors, the emotional extremes? How did Emily Brontë write a novel that has refused, for nearly two centuries, to behave itself?
At this live taping, Cunningham, Fry, and Schwartz turn to the original novel and the adaptations it’s inspired for nearly a century, from William Wyler’s 1939 Oscar-winning film to Kate Bush’s cult-classic song to Fennell’s blockbuster in the making. Moving fluidly between literature, cinema, and cultural history, the trio consider how a book once dismissed as savage and excessive became a cornerstone of the romantic imagination, endlessly rebooted for evidence that passion still matters.
Whether you’re a lifelong Brontë devotee or someone who’s always been a little suspicious of the moors, join us for an engaging live conversation about love as obsession; class, and cruelty; and why the best love stories refuse to fade away.
