Jennifer Egan, Alec Wilkinson and Deborah Treisman: Backlisted Live with John Mitchinson — William Maxwell at the New Yorker

Oct 27, 2025

Join Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Egan, longtime New Yorker fiction editor Deborah Treisman, and New Yorker author Alec Wilkinson for a conversation about the great William Maxwell — a writer of subtle beauty and a legendary New Yorker fiction editor — in a live recording of the award-winning UK podcast that gives new life to old books, Backlisted.

Over the last 10 years, the hit British podcast Backlisted, hosted by Andy Miller and John Mitchinson, has become a favorite of readers the world over. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Egan, Treisman, and Wilkinson join Mitchinson for a special episode about one of the podcast’s heroes: William Maxwell, acclaimed novelist, master of the short story, and for 40 years fiction editor of the New Yorker — and early champion of scores of some of the 20th century’s most masterful writers, from J.D. Salinger and John Cheever to Sylvia Townsend Warner and Elizabeth Taylor.

In a live taping of the podcast (its first-ever stateside appearance), don’t miss Egan, Treisman, and Wilkinson as they discuss Maxwell’s subtle power and grace — his impact on a “New Yorker style” of fiction, how Treisman and other editors have shifted the dial at the magazine since, his influence on Egan as a writer of keen psychological insight, his extraordinary mentorship of Wilkinson, and much more.
