A 92NY Shakespeare Lab Production
Nate Flower, Director
Lily Mannon, Creative Producer
92NY’s Romeo & Juliet is the inaugural theatrical production of the 92NY Shakespeare Lab. The Shakespeare Lab significantly broadens 92NY’s already impressive educational offerings, with a focus on bringing Shakespeare to young audiences and expanding access to theater in educational communities in need of arts immersion.
Directed by Nate Flower, 92NY’s Romeo & Juliet is a fully produced, yet nimble and accessible rendering of Shakespeare’s classic story. Featuring a cast of eight actors and musicians, the production kicks off its NYC tour in November 2026 and runs through March 2027.
The production travels with an impressive and innovatively designed theatrical set and sound system, adaptable to a wide range of environments — from schools and community centers to performing arts spaces and outdoor venues.
Production Designer Sofie Daley transforms everyday materials into a delightfully vivid and unexpected vision of Verona, while Eric Timlin’s live electric bass gives that world a pulse, underscoring the romance, tension, humor, and violence as the story unfolds.
A note from director Nate Flower
“I wouldn’t be the first theater director to be delightfully reminded by how relatable and relevant Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is to our current moment. The nonstop threat of hostility in the street during a tense, hot summer. The feuding, politically-polarized families who would rather destroy each other than work out their differences. The emotionally tortured teenagers who are deeply misunderstood and have to go to extreme lengths to follow their truth.
As much as everyone might arrogantly think they know this play — including me — I have discovered through our rehearsals that it still makes a big impact. It has made me a believer that if we make room for our young people to experience this marvelous and tragic story for themselves — perhaps experiencing Shakespearean performance for the first time — there is so much to be inspired by and to relate to! In that spirit I am proud to have collaborated with 92NY’s Shakespeare Lab and this fiercely talented group of actors, musicians and our production team on this project. We built this production to meet young people across NYC’s public schools where they are. We invite our young audiences to respond, to jeer, to love it, to cringe, to recoil and to maybe even be riveted; just like Shakespeare’s audiences did.”
