Imaginary Lands: Collage, Landscape & Abstraction

Imaginary Lands: Collage, Landscape & Abstraction

Overview

Create imagined landscapes inspired by the shapes, colors, and textures of wild and familiar places with artist Erin McCluskey Wheeler. Known for her layered works in paper and found materials, Erin approaches collage through color, collecting, cutting, rearranging, and transforming materials into something new. In this two-day workshop, you’ll look at the work of Richard Diebenkorn and explore ways to move between landscape and abstraction. Using a reference photo or the idea of landscape as a starting point, you’ll experiment with composition, color, found imagery, and text, first creating collages on paper and painting your own papers to use as material. You’ll then build a larger abstracted landscape directly on a wood panel, learning techniques for layering, gluing, and finishing the work. Along the way, consider how color, fragments of imagery, and collected materials can evoke the memory, mood, and story of a place. You’ll leave with a finished, ready-to-hang collage on wood panel, along with one or more works on paper. Includes materials fee.
