Finding Your Book’s Structure: Advanced Poetry Writing Workshop
In this eight week course, poets will write poems meant to organize and complete manuscripts in progress. Each week we will write towards a specific style of poetry with the goal of realizing a book that has both structure and variability. From free verse to form, from the lyric to narrative, elegies, odes, ekphrastic and persona poems, this class will push writers to their poetic edges in order to better realize a manuscript. At the beginning of each class we will discuss poems or essays that meet our theme for the week and then workshop new material. Classes may also allow for generative writing opportunities, but we will learn together by going, as the speaker in Roethke’s poem says, where we have to go.
Students are chosen on the basis of a manuscript submission. Applications must be received by Tuesday, November 17. View the submission guidelines and submit an application for this class.
Scholarship assistance is available. Applications must be returned to Scholarship Services at least two weeks before the first session.
