Tile Workshop: Painting with Underglazes
Tile Workshop: Painting with Underglazes

Overview

Create your own tile mural in this one-day workshop with artist Verdiana Patacchini. Open to students of all levels, you’ll learn to use ceramic underglazes to paint on premade tiles, resulting in a beautifully glazed collaborative piece. The day begins with a brief presentation exploring the history of tile artistry and decorative traditions. You’ll then work together on a large-scale mural, using a pre-prepared drawing divided into tile-like squares. You can choose to design your own tile or translate a portion of the composition using carbon paper before painting with underglaze. As you work, you’ll develop a hands-on understanding of the materials, from the smooth surface of the bisque tiles to the fluid, layered application of underglaze with brushes and simple tools. By the end of the workshop, your tiles will come together as a cohesive mural, which will be glazed and fired after the session. All supplies and firing fees are included in tuitionParticipants who wish to mount their tiles onto a panel will receive guidance and assistance from the instructor. Students are responsible for purchasing and bringing their own panel. A plywood board cut to the dimensions of the tile composition is recommended, to be agreed upon with the instructor in advance.
