The 92nd Street Y, New York is pleased to announce the selection of the Jewelry Center’s sixth annual Artist in Residence, Shin-Ryeong Kim of South Korea (Republic of Korea). She will work at 92NY’s studios August 19 through September 15, 2024.
Shin-Ryeong Kim is an award-winning jewelry artist whose work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions throughout Korea, and group exhibitions ranging throughout Korea, China, Japan, German, France, Poland, and in Chicago and New York City. She has an undergraduate and master’s degree in Metals and Jewelry from Kookmin University in Seoul, Korea.
Kim was chosen for the 92NY International Jewelry Residency program by a distinguished jury including John Stuart Gordon, the Benjamin Attmore Hewitt Curator of American Decorative Arts at Yale University Art Gallery; Helen Drutt, curatorial consultant, art historian, and educator; and Jonathan Wahl, 92NY Jewelry Center Director.
“In the fine tradition of Korean metalwork, this art is masterful. We’re delighted to welcome Shin-Ryeong as the 2024 Jewelry Artist in Residence,” said Wahl. “The residency is designed to provide time, space, and facilities for research, experimentation and the cultivation of new ideas in jewelry and light metalwork — all while giving the artist an immersive experience in the vibrant world of New York City and 92NY’s arts and culture. We were thrilled to receive applications from around the world, and we’re looking forward to hosting her in August and September.”
In her application, the artist said of her hopes for the residency, “New York City is a diverse hub of cultures and arts, boasting unique architectural features and a variety of spaces. I anticipate that the city’s complexity will enrich the contradictions between reality and perception that my work seeks to explore. The architecture and spaces in New York can provide sensations like those created in my virtual spaces. Additionally, interacting with diverse artists in the city will not only enhance my understanding of the global market but also allow me to share stories of excellent contemporary jewelry artists from Korea.”
92NY Jewelry Residency is supported by 92NY Board member, Kathy Chazen. Previous recipients of the Jewelry Center Artist Residency include Sungho Cho (2023), Alexander Blank (2022), Claudia Lepik (2019), Ineke Heerkens (2018), and Göran Kling (2017).
About 92NY Jewelry Center
The Jewelry Center at 92NY, under the direction of Jonathan Wahl, is the place where artists and designers from the world of studio jewelry, fashion jewelry, and academia meet to create, teach, and connect. From its beginnings as a single metalworking class in 1930, the Center has grown to become the largest and most esteemed program of its kind in the nation, and the oldest open studios in New York City. Its stellar faculty span the worlds of production and art and foster a space where all aspects of jewelry design can be explored.
The Center serves more than 1,400 students a year through 60 weekly classes, weekend workshops, and visiting artists. The Center’s four fully equipped studios enable specialized training in such techniques as enameling, goldsmithing, silversmithing, stone setting, and wax carving, in addition to a formal Judaica metalsmithing program that is unique in the nation. The wide variety of classes and levels allows students to pursue comprehensive courses of study, whether a basic introduction for the absolute beginner, or advanced workshops and studio time for pre-professionals and professionals refining their skills.
Director Jonathan Wahl hosts an ongoing series of virtual conversations with leading artists, gallerists, and journalists from across the globe which can be viewed in our archive.
The Center’s community outreach includes Teen Gems which is a fully funded scholarship program for title 1 high school students in NYC. It provides jewelry education, mentorship and funded internships for underserved students interested in the art and business of jewelry.
The Center hosts the only jeweler Artist in Residence program in New York City and is open to artists on an international scale. More information can be found here. Truly multifaceted, the 92NY Jewelry Center is a New York City gem with an increasingly global profile.
The 92NY Jewelry Artist Residency Program is supported by Kathy Chazen.
