True crime has never been more popular. But what happens when the internet becomes the jury?
Hosted by Manhattan public defender, two-time Survivor contestant, Amazing Race competitor, and legal commentator Eliza Orlins with Rutgers Law professor and criminal justice expert Thea Johnson, Criminally Online unpacks the criminal cases dominating our feeds, uncovering the legal realities behind the headlines. Join us as Orlins and Johnson sit down for a live taping of the show with Karen Friedman Agnifilo, the high-profile defense attorney representing Luigi Mangione in one of the most closely watched criminal cases in America.
Why are we so obsessed with trials that play out in the public eye? From celebrity scandals to defendants who become unlikely internet celebrities, high-profile criminal cases have become a form of cultural spectacle, blurring the lines between justice and entertainment. Social media has turned millions of spectators into amateur sleuths, dissecting every piece of evidence and courtroom exchange, turning them into viral moments online. But what does our fascination with these cases reveal about our relationship with fame, power, and punishment? And what happens when the court of public opinion threatens to overshadow the actual courtroom? With more than three decades of experience on both sides of the courtroom, including serving as Manhattan’s Chief Assistant District Attorney, Friedman Agnifilo brings an extraordinary perspective on high-stakes litigation, celebrity defendants, and the machinery of American justice.
How does internet fame shape the public’s perception of guilt or innocence? And how do attorneys build their cases for a jury when millions of armchair detectives are already weighing in? In a live taping of the podcast, hear Orlins, Johnson, and Agnifilo as they explore what happens when celebrity, social media, and criminal justice collide.
