One hundred years after The Sun Also Rises changed American literature, an all-star cast of actors and writers brings Hemingway’s masterpiece to life and asks what it means to read him today.
Join Stranger Things star Maya Hawke, Love Story breakout Sarah Pidgeon, The West Wing’s Richard Schiff, The Holdovers’ Dominic Sessa, Bosch’s Titus Welliver, DTF St. Louis’ Joy Sunday, Daisy Jones & The Six’s Will Harrison and acclaimed novelists Jay McInerney and Thomas Beller for an evening of readings and conversation celebrating the centennial of Ernest Hemingway’s groundbreaking debut.
“No amount of analysis can convey the quality of The Sun Also Rises,” The New York Times declared upon its publication in 1926. “It is a truly gripping story, told in lean, hard, athletic prose.” The novel captured a generation adrift after the First World War — drinking, falling in love, and searching for meaning in the cafés of Paris and the bullrings of Spain. Its spare prose transformed American fiction, and its author became something larger than life: the hard-drinking, bullfighting, big-game-hunting embodiment of literary masculinity. But a century later, Hemingway’s legend looks more complicated. Beneath the swagger, The Sun Also Rises is a novel of wounded men, powerful women, sexual anxiety, vulnerability, and the distance between how we perform masculinity and how we actually experience it. Was Hemingway celebrating a certain kind of manhood, or exposing its limitations?
Introduced by members of the Hemingway family, this starry centennial event brings a new generation of voices to one of the most influential novels of the century: an evening to rediscover Hemingway’s literary achievement, reconsider the myth of the man himself, and discover why his work still has the power to unsettle, provoke, and move us.
