92NY’s Jewelry Artist Residency is a juried residency for emerging and established jewelry artists to develop their work within New York City’s multifaceted art scene. For one month each summer, the Residency gives an international artist with a studio-based practice the opportunity to develop a new body of work or complete research while engaging with NYC’s cultural community. A rotating panel of experts and professionals in the arts and humanities independently reviews applications and materials.

Kellie Riggs, Director of 92NY’s Jewelry Center, said, “Ten residencies in, this program has brought artists from around the world into the Jewelry Center and into the city’s conversation about what jewelry is. I’m excited to carry that forward, and to see what the next decade of residents makes of New York in their own practices.”

The Residency includes housing in a 92NY Residence, access to a 24-hour private studio, and travel expenses to and from NYC. The resident shares their distinct aesthetic, technical, or design approach with the NYC design community through a two-day lecture and workshop at the 92NY Jewelry Center during the residency’s final weekend, and through professional meetings with participating cultural institutions that support their artistic and professional development.

Proposals for these self-directed residencies must be compatible with the available studio spaces, facilities, and resources. Selection is based on artistic merit and promise, but the panel gives significant weight to how the NYC environment will shape the artist’s work. Mature and emerging artists alike are encouraged to apply. The residency is awarded to one artist each year.

About 92NY Jewelry Center

The Jewelry Center at 92NY, under the direction of Jonathan Wahl, is the place where artists and designers from the world of studio jewelry, fashion jewelry, and academia meet to create, teach, and connect. From its beginnings as a single metalworking class in 1930, the Center has grown to become the largest and most esteemed program of its kind in the nation, and the oldest open studios in New York City. Its stellar faculty span the worlds of production and art and foster a space where all aspects of jewelry design can be explored.

The Center serves more than 1,000 students a year through 55 weekly classes, weekend workshops, and visiting artists. The Center’s four fully equipped studios enable specialized training in such techniques as enameling, goldsmithing, silversmithing, stone setting, and wax carving, in addition to a formal Judaica metalsmithing program that is unique in the nation. The wide variety of classes and levels allows students to pursue comprehensive courses of study, whether a basic introduction for the absolute beginner, or advanced workshops and studio time for pre-professionals and professionals refining their skills.

Director Emeritus Jonathan Wahl has hosted an ongoing series of virtual conversations with leading artists, gallerists, and journalists from across the globe which can be viewed in our archive.

The Center’s community outreach includes Teen Gems which is a fully funded scholarship program for high school students in NYC. It provides jewelry education, mentorship and funded internships for students interested in the art and business of jewelry. The 2025 Teen Gems program is sponsored by De Beers Group.

The Center hosts the only jeweler Artist in Residence program in New York City and is open to artists on an international scale. Truly multifaceted, the 92NY Jewelry Center is a New York City gem with an increasingly global profile.
