Joyce Carol Oates, Sadie Stein, and Rachel Syme: A Celebration of Daphne du Maurier

Oct 15, 2025

A group of celebrated writers and critics — National Book Award Winner Joyce Carol Oates, The New York Times Book Review’s Sadie Stein, and The New Yorker’s Rachel Syme — gather for a celebration of one of masters of 20th century suspense: Daphne du Maurier.

From Alfred Hitchcock and Stephen King to Gillian Flynn and Ottessa Moshfegh, Daphne du Maurier’s beguiling and chilling stories have been gripping readers and writers for nearly a century. Best known for her novel Rebecca, the basis for Hitchcock’s iconic film adaptation, du Maurier is celebrated for her gothic genius and stunning psychological insight. After Midnight, a new collection of some of her finest stories, offers a fresh look at the stunning range of her macabre brilliance, from classics like “The Birds” and “Don’t Look Now” — both of which inspired unforgettable films — to under-recognized gems like “Monte Verita” and “The Alibi.” Together, du Maurier’s stories comprise a literary spell of slow-burning menace, often imitated and rarely surpassed.

In a celebration of du Maurier’s career and the publication of After Midnight, hear Oates, Stein, and Syme, discuss the magnetic allure of du Maurier’s tales and her outsized impact on literary and cinematic suspense — stories piercing to the dark heart of obsession, mysticism, and human frailty.

“It’s time for you take Daphne du Maurier’s hand and let her lead you through the dark.” — Stephen King
