Andrea Wulf: The Traveler

Jun 10, 2026

Award-winning historian Andrea Wulf, author of The Invention of Nature, joins us for a celebration of her new book, The Traveler: One Man’s Quest for Humanity from the South Seas to Revolutionary Paris.

Diving into the lives of pioneering naturalists and scientists, Andrea Wulf’s ingenious blending of biography and environmental history has shed new light on the roots of our modern understanding of the natural world. In her new book, The Traveler, she explores the life of George Forster — who in 1772, at the age of seventeen, joined Captain Cook’s voyage on the HMS Resolution to Antarctica, New Zealand, Tahiti, and Easter Island. A gifted linguist, artist, and writer, Forster was ahead of his time — studying the diverse cultures of the world without prejudice, driven by a passion for human equality. Meticulously researched and beautifully told, Wulf’s account of his life tells the story of a man largely forgotten by history — but whose forward-thinking curiosity about the connection between the beauty of nature and human progress is an inspiration for a brighter future.

In a celebration of The Traveler’s launch, hear Wulf discuss the inspiration for the book — Forster’s radical belief that our common humanity is far greater than what sets us apart, his work connecting progressive politics with linguistics and the natural world, and the spirit of adventure that bound it together.
