Brad Gooch with Daphne Merkin and Molly Jong-Fast: Good Morning Moon

Jun 17, 2026

Award-winning biographer Brad Gooch talks to celebrated writer and critic Daphne Merkin and journalist Molly Jong-Fast about his intimate new memoir of queer family, Good Morning Moon.

Brad Gooch has long brought artists and writers like Keith Haring, Flannery O’Connor, and Frank O’Hara vividly to life on the page. In Good Morning Moon, he turns to his own life — a vivid portrait of family, hidden histories and unexpected fatherhood. As Gooch reflects on becoming a parent in middle age, building a family with his husband, and uncovering long-buried truths about his past, Good Morning Moon is a lyrically beautifully meditation on memory, identity, and queer belonging . “At a time when human rights for the LGBTQ community are being thrown into question,” says Andrew Solomon, “this honest but celebratory book about late-stage happiness is a beacon of hope and discovery.”

Hear Gooch, Merkin, and Jong-Fast in a conversation about the art of memoir, the shifting shape of modern family, and the rewards of telling the truth about our own lives — a frank, funny evening exploring the stories we inherit and the lives we make for ourselves.
