Philosopher and theologian Mordecai Kaplan speaks with novelist, translator, and lecturer Maurice Samuel about the role of Judaism in the contemporary world. Kaplan, who co-founded Reconstructionist Judaism, argues that modern people outside of Israel are no longer able to meaningfully fulfill the traditional requirements of Judaism. He contends that changes can and should be made so that people are able to practically utilize and live the religion. Samuel defends the traditions of older European Jews but advocates for interpreting those traditions in “a terminology that is fit for the present.” The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
