Join famed conductor, music historian, and President of Bard College, Leon Botstein for this rare opportunity to dive into the biographical and musical world of Gustav Mahler. This course will follow Mahler’s career along biographical lines, starting with his student days in Vienna and his meteoric rise as one of Europe’s leading conductors. Mahler’s own music will be discussed in relationship to the work of his contemporaries, particularly Richard Strauss. His tenure as director of the Vienna Imperial Opera, and his final years in New York will be considered along with the many myths and realities surrounding his marriage to Alma Schindler, his identity as a Jew, and his philosophical outlook. The reaction to his music, in his lifetime and posthumously, and Mahler’s place in the history of music as a composer will frame the closing session.

Participants will come away with a stronger understanding of Mahler’s life and work as well as the genre of Romanticism.
