Parallel universes. Artificial intelligence. Utopian societies. What if the wildest ideas in science fiction could teach us something profound about the world we live in, and the one we might create?
From the imagined societies of Ursula K. Le Guin to the mind-bending realities of Philip K. Dick, science fiction has long challenged everything we think we know about human nature, consciousness, and the future. Cornell neuroscientist Elizabeth Riley, whose wildly popular Human Bonding course has become a viral sensation, joins us for an intimate conversation about the intersection of neuroscience, speculative fiction, and the limitless possibilities of human imagination.
Drawing on classics like Le Guin’s The Dispossessed and Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Riley brings her expertise in the neurological systems governing attention, perception, and emotional memory to reveal how our brains shape our understanding of reality. How can sci-fi expose the invisible assumptions that govern our lives? And how might it invite us to imagine entirely different ways of being?
In an intimate lecture and conversation, hear Riley takes us on a mind-bending journey through science, fiction, and the frontiers of human possibility.
After the talk, stick around for a one-hour open bar with Riley and your fellow literary futurists.

Elizabeth Riley teaches the viral Human Bonding course at Cornell University. She is a neuroscientist at the Cornell Joan Klein Jacobs Center for Precision Nutrition and Health, where she studies the brain’s ancient arousal systems, which shape alertness, attention, and emotional memory, and how they change across the lifespan.
Her research combines brain imaging, pupillometry, and nerve stimulation with measures of the body, such as metabolic health, to understand how these brain systems interact with whole-body health as we age. She believes the scientific process is a profoundly hopeful human endeavor, and views scientific literacy as crucial protection against confusion, exploitation, and ill health.
Outside the lab, she is a lifelong science fiction fan, orchestral violinist, environmentalist, cat lover, and devoted wife and mother. She holds a PhD in neuroscience from Boston University School of Medicine and an undergraduate degree in biological engineering from MIT.
