World-renowned magician Joshua Jay joins Rabbi David Ingber for an evening of magic and conversation about Jay’s new book, Magic as I See It, a remarkable and revealing visual record of the impact of magic from his perspective on people all over the world.
A former World Champion of Sleight of Hand who has fooled Penn & Teller, performed sold-out shows at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, and created original magic for Game of Thrones, Jay has spent much of his life making people experience the impossible. But for more than a decade, he has also been documenting what happens on the other side of the trick. Traveling the world with his camera, Jay photographed people at the precise instant they encountered a magic trick, often for the first time.
Jay begins the evening with a live magic show. He’ll then take us behind the lens of Magic as I See It, sharing photographs and stories from his travels and exploring what our faces reveal when certainty suddenly gives way to wonder. Then Jay joins Rabbi David Ingber for a wide-ranging conversation about magic, Jewish identity, belief, skepticism, and our appetite for the inexplicable.
Hear them consider the remarkable place Jewish performers have occupied in the history of modern magic, from Houdini onward, and what magic and Judaism share: traditions built around questioning, interpretation, and the possibility that the world contains more than first meets the eye.
