If you love food as much as we do, when you’re not thinking about it you’re often reading about it!
Join us for our summer reading group, designed around four books with intriguing stories about everything from salt to the ways we eat to the secret life of groceries to the lush world of Italy’s lemon trees. Participants read each book prior to that week’s session, and before gathering online for discussions led by Laura Jackson of NYC’s legendary Kitchen Arts and Letters. Participants will receive the books with registration.
A fascinating, eye-opening dive into the most essential ingredient in the modern kitchen and what the author calls “one of the most sought-after commodities in human history.”
Even before we gained newfound respect for grocery access and the workers who enable it during the pandemic, those in the system knew its complexities rival NASA’s. In this riveting book, Lorr explores what he calls “the dark miracle of the American supermarket” – its staggering logistics, what’s really behind the food on its shelves, and more.
“This exploration of how we eat, from the Last Supper to fast-food burgers is a delight,” wrote The Guardian. With fascinating history and a sharp wit, Visser looks at everything from cannibalism to table manners in a quirky and irresistible read.
Citrus may not rank high for most among life’s great pursuits, but Helena Attlee isn’t most. Her fascination with the gorgeous and bountiful citrus groves of Italy is captured in this lovely, evocative book, filled with history and the sensuous appeal of Italy throughout.
This program will take place on July 13, 27, August 10, and 24 from 6:30-8 pm ET. Sessions will be recorded and available for later viewing by those who register. Laura Jackson has been a bookseller with Kitchen Arts and Letters since 2019. She was hired primarily to assist founder Nach Waxman with out-of-print book sales and acquisitions. Since Nach’s passing in 2021, Laura has led the out-of-print team for the store. Prior to entering the book business, Laura worked for over 15 years in the foodservice industry, both in the front- and back-of-the-house. It is fair to say she spends most of her time thinking about food and books, and happily so.
