A first guitar should be comfortable to hold and easy to play. The strings should be reasonably easy to press, and the tuning pegs should turn smoothly and hold the instrument in tune.
For 92NY group guitar classes, choose an acoustic guitar unless the class description states otherwise. Nylon-string guitars are generally more comfortable for young beginners because the strings are softer under the fingers. Older students and adults may use a nylon-string or steel-string acoustic guitar, depending on the class or course of study.
Guitar size is not determined by age alone. Height, arm length, hand size, and body shape all affect comfort. As a general guide, very young or smaller children often use a ¼- or ½-size guitar; many elementary-age students use a ¾-size guitar; and most teens and adults use a full-size guitar. Full-size guitars also come in larger- and smaller-body designs, so a smaller-framed teen or adult may prefer a smaller-body model. When possible, visit a music store for help with sizing. When purchasing online, choose a retailer with a straightforward return or exchange policy.
Guitar appropriate for the class or lesson, protective case or gig bag, clip-on chromatic tuner, and guitar strap. Some starter packages include several of these accessories, but confirm that the case is the correct size for the instrument.
The models below are steel-string acoustic guitars. Students enrolling in classical guitar study should choose a full-size nylon-string guitar instead.
Any basic chromatic clip-on tuner is suitable. These models are widely available:
