About Purchasing a Ukulele

A first ukulele should be easy to hold, easy to tune, and comfortable to play. The strings should be easy to press, and the tuning pegs should move smoothly and stay in place so the instrument does not constantly slip out of tune.

For 92NY group ukulele classes, a soprano ukulele is the clearest default unless the class description states otherwise. A concert ukulele is slightly larger, with more room between the frets, and may be more comfortable for an adult private-lesson student, an older child, or a player with larger hands.

When purchasing online, confirm the ukulele’s size and whether a case is included. Very inexpensive novelty or toy ukuleles often have unstable tuning and can make learning unnecessarily frustrating.

Ukulele, protective case or gig bag, clip-on chromatic tuner, and an optional ukulele strap. Some packages include a case and tuner, but confirm what is included.
